Wordsearches

We love doing wordsearches in class, so needless to say when Mr Kennedy told us on Thursday that we were going to make our very own wordsearches, we were very excited. To make the wordsearch, we first decided what it was going to be about, and then we wrote down 12 words to put into it. Finally we put them into a blank wordsearch, going both horizontally and vertically. There were some great results and Mr Kennedy was delighted with the effort we put in. If you'd like to try one of our wordsearches, click here and print one off:

Groundhog Day

Today we were learning all about Groundhog Day. This takes place every year on the 2nd of February in America and Canada. The tradition goes that when a groundhog wakes from its hibernation, it looks out of it's burrow and if it is sunny, it sees a shadow and stays inside, meaning there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If, however, the groundhog sees no shadow and leaves it's burrow, then spring has arrived!

The most famous groundhog event happens every year on Gobler's Nob, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in America. A groundhog named Phil comes out and predicts what will happen with the weather for the next 6 weeks. Because it is so famous, thousands of people come from all over the world to see Phil on February 2nd. Check out a video of Phil here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=v8kDo9hmwY4

We decided to have a go at predicting the weather ourselves, so we will used a special groundhog sheet to record what we think the weather will be like on Friday the 14th of February. There were some interesting guesses, so best of luck to everyone!

We also played a game where we were blindfolded and had to pin the shadow under the groundhog in the correct place. This was great fun!

Chinese New Year

Today we began to learn about China and Chinese New Year. The Chinese celebrate their New Year on a different day each year, and they also call their years after one of 12 different animals.
Here is a video of how that came about:

http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/short-stories/the-great-race

To find out what year you were born in, click here:

http://www.travelchinaguide.com/intro/social_customs/zodiac/

We also watched a video of what a Chinese New Year is like (even though this one is in Australia!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKzNPxu_QBU

This website shows you what your name is in Chinese

http://chineseculture.about.com/od/thechineselanguage/a/Chinese-Name-And-English-Name.htm

Finally we had a go at writing our own names in Chinese - it was great fun

Friday 31st January

Gung Hay Fat Choi everyone! On Friday we celebrated Chinese New Year. Fortune cookies are a very popular part of a Chinese meal, so we decided to make our own out of paper and write a special message inside. If you were lucky enough to get one we hope you enjoyed it!

We also made small lanterns to decorate the classroom and scary dragon masks too. Here is some of our work:

If you have any more fun facts about Chinese New Year, or even China itself, make sure to let us know by leaving a comment on this post.

A famous inventor

This week we were learning about a very famous inventor called Thomas Edison. Over the course of his life he had more than 1000 inventions. An invention is where you design and make something that has never been done before. Thomas Edison is most famous for designing the light bulb, but he also designed the first phonograph, which was the first piece of technology to be able to play recorded music, and the first cine camera, which are still used in cinemas today.

If you want to learn more about Thomas Edison, have a look here:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7gpF19vBo8

We had a go at designing our own inventions in class, and there were great ideas, such as,

- a pancake maker
- an orange juice maker
- a snowball gun
- x ray vision glasses
- an IPhone flick up
- a pen tattoo machine
- a hover car that can fly
- a hover boat
- a "go away rats" machine
- a tent machine
- a cloning machine
- a burger machine
- a football machine
- glowing up paper
- a toy for a dog and a horse
- a golf ball machine "a quick way to play a game of golf"
- a Lego bat gun
- edible paint
- a smiley face swimsuit
- a head warming vibrating helmet
- glow up makeup
- a magic homework pen
- a swimsuit that glows in the water
- a hot dog maker
- a snow machine
- a burger maker 2000
- a firework machine
- a homework machine
- a pancake muffin and doughnut machine

Here are a few of our designs :)

Limericks

This week we have been looking at, and working on, limericks. A limerick is a funny little poem that has five lines. It is usually a kind of nonsense poem, and doesn't always have to make sense. Usually the last word in the first, second and last lines will rhyme, and the last words in the third and fourth lines will rhyme. Here are a few funny examples:

There once was a fellow named Tim
whose dad never taught him to swim.
He fell off a dock
and sunk like a rock.
And that was the end of him.

There was a young lady from Leeds
Who swallowed a package of seeds.
Now this sorry young lass
Is quite covered in grass,
But has all the tomatoes she needs.

There was once a young girl who said : "Why
Can't I look in my ear with my eye?
If I put my mind to it
I'm sure I can do it.
You never can tell till you try."

A circus performer named Brian
Once smiled as he rode on a lion.
They came back from the ride,
But with Brian inside,
And the smile on the face of the lion.

Once we had listened to a few we decided to write some of our own. The results were pretty good I think you'll agree!

Healthy eating

11th December:

Well done to everyone who completed the Healthy Eating challenge by eating three pieces of fruit or veg every day for a week. I hope you enjoyed your extra time in the yard!

4th December

Today we discovered just how much fun healthy eating can be! We got to try out loads of different kinds of fruit and vegetables that we haven't had before. Mr Kennedy gave us all a sheet and we had to tick whether we liked each food or not. There were loads of unusual foods to try, such as courgette, avocado, mango, radish, chilli, grapefruit, kiwi, fig, cranberry, scallion, beetroot, lime and dates. We had great fun trying them all and the chilli in particular provoked a great debate and some funny reactions too!

Jaydeen must have had the chilli!

Here is a chart to show the amount of people who liked and didn't like each kind of food.

2nd December

We have been learning a lot about healthy eating recently in Room 5. We learned about the Food Pyramid, and the different food groups and what each group does for our bodies. Mr Kennedy gave us a quiz today with ten questions, and there were a few answers that we didn't expect! Check it out here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/schools/4_11/uptoyou/healthy/quiz.shtml

We also came up with a healthy lunch for our lunchbox, and discovered exactly how much sugar is in a can of fizzy drink and a bar of chocolate. Check out this experiment, it's enough to make you reach for a glass of water or a nice healthy piece of fruit!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F10EyGwd57M

Mr Kennedy has decided to set us a target for this week, and so if we can eat three portions of fruit and vegetables every day this week until Sunday, we get ten minutes extra in the yard on Monday! We all got a chart to fill in for every day, and with such a great reward, we expect to see plenty of charts filled in.

Some fun games about healthy eating can be found here:

Finally, we all went home with some great information packs on healthy eating, which are well worth taking a look at. Also, the school's healthy eating policy contains important information.
